Understanding Memory Foam Mattresses and Toppers, plus what to avoid when buying them on Ebay

Memory Foam is a very difficult product to understand in general. There are so many myths and false truths on the internet that it is difficult to understand the product. There are two key things that must be known before purchasing a memory foam product online. The first is density and the second is ILD (Indention Load Deflection - or FIRMNESS) . Most listings don't even mention ILD and density is very often lied about on Ebay.
Density is a measure of quality which tells you how much one cubic foot of memory foam weighs. Density is a measure of quality and not firmness. The most common density is 5 lb. memory foam and that is where the confusion begins. Tempur material was the first memory foam to come onto the market and its density is 5.3 lbs. per cubic foot. This quickly has become the standard for measuring quality in memory foam products. For a topper, 3 lb. memory foam or better will normally suffice. For a mattress, 4 lb. memory foam or better is recommended. If the density is less than 4 lbs. per cubic foot, the mattress will not last very long. You can easily expect a 4 lb. or better mattress to last you for more than 10 years. There is a new type of memory foam that weighs in at an 8 lb. density. Tempurpedic has a new mattress coming that uses a 7.2 lb. density. These super-high density memory foams are an interesting product that will create new trends in the foam bedding industry.

ILD is a measure of firmness with foam products. It can be extremely confusing to understand how the measuring process works, so I will try my best to explain it in plain english. The easiest way to understand ILD is to use a sliding scale. With memory foam products the most common ILD ratings are from 8-20. 8 is plush and 20 is firm. Tempur material has an ILD of 14 and has a medium firmness level. Memory Foam with an ILD rating of 10 is plush and supportive with a rating of 5 lb. density. ILD is the MOST important thing to consider when buying memory foam products anywhere.

Creating memory foam
Memory Foam is created in 3 main ways

The first way to create memory foam is with a molding process. This is the way Tempurpedic creates their memory foam. The process uses chemicals that all other memory foam manufacturers use, but it is honestly a subpar way to create memory foam that results in inconsistencies to the way each mattress feels. Test this for yourself and you'll find that some Tempurpedic mattresses that are the same model will feel different when tested.
The second way to produce memory foam is in a vacuum sealed chamber. This is the way foamex creates their memory foam and it provides a solid feel and a consistent product.
The last way to create memory foam products is perhaps the most disturbing. This is the way most Chinese memory foam is created. They create a closed cell foam and then they crush it to create an open celled memory foam. This leads to a feel that is fairly consistent and is honestly not as awful as it sounds. Chinese memory foam has improved in quality dramatically in the last few years and can be a decent value at much lower prices than some of the common brand names.

On Ebay, 85% of listings are set up by only two different companies. One company is completely dishonest about their products and the other uses their other IDs to mislead customers into seeing false commpetition. Be careful when buying memory foam on Ebay and don't become a victim.

Mattress Comparisons - Inner Spring, Air Beds, Water Beds, Latex and, Memory Foam

Mattress options have changed dramatically in the last 15-20 years. Memory Foam and Latex mattresses have become common and quite inexpensive. Inner-spring mattresses have changed as well, as major mattress manufacturer's incorporate latex, memory foam, and other types of polyurethane foam into their mattresses. It just goes to show that innovation is paving the way for sleeping surfaces for all of us. Below you can find the positive qualities and the negative qualities of each type of mattress, so you can choose what is best for you.

Inner Spring Mattress:

Inner Spring Mattresses are the tired and true mattress that most people have come to expect as they are the most common. We all grew up with a mattress that ended up poking at us with broken springs when we were children. These mattresses have begun to change to try to attract the customer that would want to purchase foam mattresses. By incorporating different types of foam, these mattresses are attempting to pave the way for a new kind of innerspring mattress. Most sets consist of a mattress and foundation. The inner springs consist of hundreds of coils of wire of different gauges. These are normally covered with some type of quilting or pillow top to give a softer feel. These mattress sets should last between 5 and 10 years. Most find innerspring mattresses uncomfortable when they are compared to foam mattresses or water beds. Innerspring mattresses will hammock and cave in the middle when using a standard innerspring design.

Water beds:

Water beds reduce the pressures on the body that a traditional mattress cause. Sleeping on water gives the proper support and spinal alignment one needs to wake up more rested and in less pain. Water bed mattresses are the original conforming type of mattress. The water can also be heated to provide therapeutic effects of heat for one that sleeps on it. The problem with a water bed is the water. A simple puncture can equal a huge mess. If you share a water bed with a partner, every time they move there will be a wave that runs the risk of waking you up.

Air Mattress:

Air mattresses offer multiple firmness settings based on your choice. Each side of the bed adjusts to the individual level of comfort you select. Air beds provide a level of conforming that is similar to a Water bed. The Sleep Number® bed is the first of this kind and like TempurPedic®, they charge a premium for it. There are plenty of other options for air mattresses if that is what you like. Most Air mattresses offer memory foam or latex add-ons. Air mattresses have many interior parts that can and often do break. Most companies that offer this type of mattress include inferior warranties and a lot of fine print. Air beds can easily hammock like innerspring mattresses which can lead to an uncomfortable sleeping surface.

Memory Foam Mattress:

The overall body support offered by a quality memory foam mattress is the best of any mattress (in our educated opinion). Memory foam was initially designed to offer pressure relief. It provides that better than any other surface available today. Memory Foam feels more solid than latex foam. Latex has a very bouncy feel. Memory Foam can vary greatly between manufacturers. TempurPedic was the first company to offer Memory Foam, as they designed memory foam mattresses for medical purposes. They were also the first company to offer this type of bedding to the general public. They advertise heavily and it shows in their pricing, they charge a premium for their product while other options offer an equal quality for much less. Memory Foam is a Polyurethane foam and is not a natural product. Memory Foam can have a funky odor to start with and some people find it extremely offensive.

Latex Mattresses:

Latex mattresses offer a conforming comparable to memory foam, while offering a natural sleep surface. Most companies offer organic cotton covers for their mattresses as well. Most natural latex mattresses do not have much resilience and normally will only last a few years. Talalay or Dunlop are the most common forms of a latex mattress. Talalay is the more involved process and provides the best resilience. It is also washed to remove any impurities. Latex gives you a bouncy feel, after all it is rubber. All latex is not alike and quality levels vary greatly between the different latex options. Be careful and ensure that you purchase the best possible quality latex available.

Insider Secrets of Memory Foam Mattresses and the Bedding Industry

What You Should Know About Our Memory Foam:

Foam is a commodity. Viscoelastic Memory Foam was introduced to the world over 40 years ago by NASA. A company called Tempur-Pedic® took the concept and developed a mattress that reduced pressure points and allowed back pain sufferers, clinical patients and thousands of consumers to sleep through out the night with a NEW concept called “Weightless Sleep”. The Tempur-pedic® mattress has changed the world of sleep as we know it.

Our mattress also use the 5.3lb density the Tempur-Pedic® mattress uses. Consumers of today like yourself are looking for alternative versions of the TempurPedic® mattress so they can save money. Our 5.3 lb. memory foam is comparable to Tempur-Pedic® in density and ILD as well as composition. We use an upgraded cover with quilted sides to prevent breakdown of the memory foam. All of this for less money. Our mattresses have a 5.3lb Density, Same as Tempur-Pedic® and we also have a 90 day money back guarantee.

Good Foam -vs- Bad Foam - What To Look Out For:

Searching online for a memory foam mattress, but there are so many choices. Who is being honest and who is being dishonest? There are many different memory foam choices on the market today! The sleep experts here at memoryfoamfurniture.com have developed a list of what to look for when choosing the right memory foam mattress. We have access to ALL different memory foam densities due to our huge purchasing power in the foam manufacturing industry.

We will not mention any names due to the fact that we do not need to slander another company to gain sales. We have more than enough business through our website and medical affiliates. We simply want you to feel comfortable throughout the entire process. We would love to gain you as a customer because we know once you sleep on one of our sleep systems you will refer you family and friends. Why Pay Retail Prices?

2lb foam is not recommended for ideal sleeping situations. There are at least 5 online companies selling 3lb memory foam and calling it 5.3lb which is totally misleading and false advertising. These companies are not manufacturers, yet claim that they are the leading company online and so forth. These companies also do not have a 90 day trial period. The reason for this is because they work out of a small office below their homes and make themselves appear like a large corporation. There are also at least 3 online companies who have changed their website and phone numbers to avoid warranty issues and refunds. This is unacceptable.

Buyer Beware: There is a new company on the engines advertising super low prices starting at $195.00 on a so called memory foam mattress. The problem is the uncanny consumer would normally be fooled into thinking this was the greatest mattress on the market for the price. NOT SO FAST! Let’s take a closer look: The 7” Base Foam Should not be lower than the hospital grade LX foam used by Memoryfoamfurniture.com and Tempur-Pedic® rated as 2835 that’s 2.8lb base foam with and ILD of 35 which is super high quality. The foam we inspected was only 1835 foam which is the cheapest non hospital grade foam on the market. Rated at 1.8 lb density and 35 ILD this is not recommended for ideal sleeping situations, not to mention the density of the 2” on the so called memory foam was only 2.9 lb density which is the lowest grade foam on the market. We also found that it was convoluted finger foam with zones which any one can buy for under $29.95 at Walmart. This is certainly NOT “ Next generation” foam as advertised!

Here are some things we found when we did our test on this mattress:The Test Mattress we received came in a black box which was shipped by UPS. We also received the mattress with a horrible stenching odor and had no cover on it at all. The foam was already breaking down in our hands as we fought to make sure the jelly rolled mattress did’nt knock us over. We were also very shocked at the weight of the mattress which was like 40lbs or so. More proof that the density of the mattress was super cheap. It was just 2 pieces of foam glued together. A good foam mattress should consist of at least 5 inches of LX foam base, made of hospital grade foam and a density of no lower than 4.8lb per cubic ft. memoryfoamfurniture.com does not recommend glue in a foam mattress because in some cases glue has given off a bad odor and has affected ashthma and allergy sufferers.

Latex Bedding Buying Guide

Welcome to our Latex Bedding Buying Guide. First and foremost, I do think that Latex is a terrific product. It is very dense (typically 4 lb/cubic foot density) and a quality mattress core of latex will last virtually forever as shown by the warranties given by most companies. Latex mattress cores (this is the industry term for the piece of latex used to make the mattress and they tend to be 5" or 6" thick) are always made with holes in them (called pincore holes) - these holes soften the latex and make it comfortable. The larger the holes, the softer the latex core will feel. Most latex mattresses just have one size of holes through the whole mattress so the mattress has a uniform feel throughout. Some cores, though, are made with different sections of latex with different sized holes. This allows the bed to have different zones - softer under the shoulders and feet and firmer under the hips. Finally, many latex beds layer other materials (whether softer latex or memory foam, etc) on top of the latex core to give the bed a softer or more yielding feel. Latex mattresses have a nice bouncy feel and they are very supportive. I think that latex makes a great core and is a big improvement over inner springs and denser and more substantial than foam cores.

What is latex, though? Originally it was just natural rubber that was made of the sap of actual rubber trees. And latex is still made this way today. But during WWII, scientists also learned how to create synthetic latex. I don't claim to understand the chemistry behind all this, but manufacturers tell me that synthetic latex has the same properties as natural.

Today, most latex mattresses tend to be either made of synthetic latex or more typically a combination of synthetic and natural latex. The manufacturers of these combination latex mattresses that I talked with claim that a combination makes the whole latex core more resilient. Of course, the all-natural latex manufacturers said this was rubbish - that an all natural product is just as resilient and is actually made of natural rubber (as opposed to petrochemical synthetic latex). To a degree I think that it is just a matter of costs - synthetic latex may be cheaper and so more cost effective to use in a mattress. Are there advantages to going natural latex over the synthetic? Either kind seems to give a similar feel and similar support, but be warned - you may pay more for the natural latex mattress and also find that finding an all-natural latex mattress is difficult.

This raises the second way latex mattresses can be different - the manner in which the cores are made. There are two ways they are manufactured: 1) The original method, called the Dunlop method, involves first whipping the latex liquid with air to make a foam, then pouring the latex liquid into a mold and heating it till it vulcanizes, and 2) the Talalay method, which is a bit more involved. In the Talalay method, the latex foam a vacuum is placed on the mold and other processes are involved that some claim produces foam that has a more consistent cell structure. The foam, in either process, once made is then washed a number of times to get rid or excess soaps and proteins that can make the foam degrade early and also reduces the rubbery smell of latex. So on top of the basic two choices of which kind of latex you want to have (natural or synthetic) you also get the choice of how the latex is made (Dunlop method or Talalay). Which is best? From my experience at the shows, it depended on whom you talked with. Talalay producers sold the product as being a less dense feeling, airier product due to the way the latex is made under pressure and that it had a more uniform cell structure. My take: I think they are both good products, but I tended toward the Talalay just based on the feel. So after looking at all the flavors, I tended toward Talalay latex. It is less expensive than natural latex and gives a similar feel.

Would you want to put a topper on your latex mattress? I'm often asked this, and my standard answer is that it depends. Latex is a great product, and many people may find the mattress alone very comfortable. But latex just doesn't have the pressure relief or conforming qualities of memory foam, so many people may still want to add a topper layer of 2" or so of memory foam to really finish off the feel of the latex mattress. The best way to find the perfect latex mattress is to find one that already uses latex and memory foam together.

There are important things to keep in mind when buying Latex-bedding products:
1. People with latex allergies do not normally react to latex bedding as they have less latex in them than latex gloves. Most companies use something like Bioguard to make their mattress hypoallergenic.
2. Latex bedding does not have to cost you an arm and a leg, look around as most latex bedding is available for much less than those available at local retailers.
3. Mattresses made of latex are extremely heavy! Most are shipped through freight companies. Make sure you have someone available to help you carry the bed through your home, so you don’t hurt yourself!
4. The best way to enjoy latex bedding is when it is combined with memory foam. A deluxe latex and memory foam mattress is about as luxurious as bedding can get.

Thank you for reading our latex-buying guide. Look around our store for great prices on Latex Bedding.

Ross from Memory Foam Furniture

Memory Foam Furniture - your place for memory foam mattresses, toppers, pillows, pet beds, seat and wheelchair cushions, and custom orders

Memory Foam Furniture - your place for memory foam mattresses, toppers, pillows, pet beds, seat and wheelchair cushions, and custom orders: "What is Memory Foam?

Nasa first created it for astronauts and decided that this material wasn't quite durable
enough for outer space. Swedish scientists saw this as a perfect opportunity for those
of us that live on the ground. After ten years of research, viscoelastic memory foam
was born!

Viscoelastic memory foam is made to cradle the body and eliminate those nasty
pressure points that cause most of us pain every day. Our products mold to your
body's shape which leads to a better nights rest, more energy, deeper sleep, comfort
all day long, and less pain. This all started with mattresses, but we offer many other
products as well. Memory foam mattresses are used largely in hospitals because they
relieve pain and reduce bed sores for those confined to a bed. The point is that you
WILL be more comfortable with our cushions, mattresses, pillows, and all of the other
products we offer.

The memory foam material used in this mattress has an 'open cell design'. What that
means for us is that this mattress lets air circulate, disperses body heat, improves
circulation, and is dense enough to provide the best support money can buy. Your
body heat is what makes the memory foam conform to your body. Memory foam also
stays cool in heat and warm in cold, by dispersing your body heat through all of the
material.

Are our products right for you? The answer is yes! According to WebMD picking a
mattress depends on personal preference. According to Jeffrey K. Bergin, DC, dean at
the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Ill. 'There's no truth to the adage

Updated Memory Foam Buying Guide

Memory Foam is becoming a very popular item! The problem is that not everybody is honest about their product and there are specific things one must look for when thinking about purchasing memory foam products. Memory Foam was discovered by NASA. NASA was looking for a material that would absorb the tremendous G-Forces that were pushing against the astronauts during takeoff. Swedish scientists decided that this material would be great for bedding products. Now memory foam is used for all kinds of products from mattresses to pillows, from cushions, to pet beds and beyond. There are a few specific tricks that sellers are currently using on the web that we should all be watching for:Density is one of the most important things to watch for with memory foam. If someone is saying their product is 5.0 or 6.0, make sure that it is followed by lbs. or pounds because that is how density is measured in memory foam. Some sellers are referring to the weight of 2 cubic feet of memory foam, which is not a proper measurement. Proper measurement for the density of memory foam is the weight of 1 cubic foot of memory foam. The actual density of their product is between 2.5 and 3 lb. Tempurpedic mattresses are made of 5.3 lb. density memory foam. Doctors and Chiropractors recommend a 4.0 lb. memory foam because it is less firm and costs less. Any density below 4.0 lb. is not going to last very long, the higher the density the longer the foam will retain all of its original properties. 3.0 lb. memory foam and anything less dense is not recommended for bedding products because it doesn't provide enough support to the body.If an item is priced too low, there is probably a reason. Unless a person is selling a used product, no memory foam topper or overlay should be selling for $25 - $30. If a price is too good to be true, there is probably a reason for it. Make sure you ask questions of sellers with prices that seem too low. It is one thing to find a great deal and another to be ripped off and stuck with a product that isn't what it should be.Be wary of any mattress that has less than 2 inches of memory foam. Memory foam mattresses all have a base to give support to the foam, not your body. Stomach sleepers should use at least 2 inches of memory foam and side or back sleepers should have 3 or 4 inches of memory foam for proper support. These tricks are stealing money from people every day. Remember that people cannot go back and leave more feedback in a year when their product stops working. These steps below are the most important things that will help you get the most bang for your buck with memory foam products:Stay informed! Be aware of what you like and what you don't. 5.0 lb. memory foam can be too firm for some people. If you like a softer mattress than you would be better off with the less expensive 4.0 lb. memory foam. There are also beds that combine the firmness of 5.0 lb. foam with a plush softer layer of the 4.0 lb. foam.Do your research! Check in as many places as possible. Your research should be done through search engines like Google, Yahoo, or MSN. Check what websites are offering products for and what they come with. This will help you know what to expect from a good seller. Also, check ebay stores, paypal shops, and any other places you might find sellers that you can trust.Make sure you know the density of the product you are buying. It is important to know what to expect from your memory foam products.Check the warranty! Tempurpedic warranties their mattresses for 20 years and you should not spend your money with a company that doesn't give you 20 years on a warranty.Check the trial time! You need at least a few weeks to find out whether memory foam is right for you. If you don't get at least a 30 day trial, don't buy the mattress! There is a reason for them not to offer you a trial. Be wary of sellers that don't offer a decent amount of time to test their product. Keep in mind that you will have to repackage the mattress and ship it back at your own expense, you should feel good about purchasing from the retailer you choose.

Thank you for reading our memory foam buying guide!

means that you only get the best when you
purchase from Memory Foam Furniture. Our
products are all designed by the owner of this
company and cannot be purchased elsewhere!
New products will be introduced periodically, so
check back often to see what new products we
have come up with!

The main idea behind our products is that
memory foam mattresses all have a base. It
works only with a solid supportive base under it.
Our question was: Why would anyone make
cushions, pillows, or any other item without a
base? Instead of asking the question, we
decided to answer it ourselves! Our products
all have a base to ensure that our customers
get the best possible comfort level out of all of
our products. Our seat or wheelchair cushion
can be used on a chair, in the car, or at the
office. Because of the solid foam base it can
also be used on the floor, concrete, bleachers,
and picnic tables. It is important to us that you
can use our products anywhere. YOU
CANNOT FIND MEMORY FOAM PRODUCTS
WITH A BASE ANYWHERE ELSE! Check out
our products and see for yourself!

'There's no truth to the adage
that a harder be"

Memory Foam Buying Guide

Memory foam is beginning to become very popular online! The problem is that there are sellers out there that aren't honest with customers. Here are things to look for when purchasing memory foam products!
  1. Density is the most important thing to look for when purchasing memory foam products. The words pound or lbs. should be after any number that is used to describe a memory foam product. Some sellers (mainly on Ebay) are saying that their item is 5.0 or 6.0, they are not measuring density but they are measuring the weight of 2 cubic feet of memory foam. The actual density is between 2.5 and 3.0 lbs. The lowest grade recommended for bedding products is 4.0 lbs. Otherwise the memory foam will not last long and will not provide proper support.
  2. If a memory foam item is priced very low, there is probably a reason for it. Unless you are buying a used item, a memory foam mattress topper or overlay should cost more than $25 or $30. It is one thing to find a deal and another to get ripped off and be stuck with a product that doesn't do what you thought it would.
  3. Be wary of any mattress that has less than 2 inches of memory foam. Any less than 2 inches is not enough to give you the luxurious feel of memory foam. Stomach sleepers need at least 2 inches of memory foam and back or side sleepers need at least 3 or 4 inches of memory foam for the best support.

The tricks above are stealing money from people everyday. Make sure you can trust the company you are spending your hard-earned money with.

The steps below will help you get the most bang for your buck when it comes to memory foam products.

  1. Do your research! Check as many sites as possible when looking for the right memory foam item for you. Check shopping sites like amazon.com, shopping.com, and overstock.com. Check auction sites like ebay.com, ioffer.com, bidville.com, and isurfauctions.com. Compare prices and make sure to ask questions if you get confused.
  2. Be aware of what you like and what you don't! Check your local furniture stores for Tempurpedic mattresses and see if you like how they feel. Tempurpedic uses a 5.3 lb. density memory foam. Doctors and Chiropractors recommend a 4.0 lb. memory foam because it is softer, but still gives good support. You need to know what you want when you go into a buying situation.
  3. Make sure you know the density of the item you are buying. Don't jump at a cheap price and end up with junk.
  4. Check the Warranty! Tempurpedic offers a 10 year warranty on all of their beds. Any company that offers less is not worth buying from. If they don't believe in their product, you shouldn't either.
  5. Check the trial! All memory foam companies should offer a trial period. If there is a trial of less than 30 days, don't buy from them!

Tempurpedic's memory foam monopoly is now over!

Tempurpedic has been charging WAY too much for far too long. We are here to relieve the cost constraints that have been put onto memory foam products. Our prices are thousands less for mattresses and our other items are a step ahead of all other companies. By adding a base to our products, you can use them in places that products from other companies can't even be used in!

Memory foam Info

Memory foam was designed by Nasa to decrease pressure on the behinds of astronauts during takeoff. Someone came up with the bright idea that this would be great for a sleeping surface! Memory foam reacts to body weight and temperature and conforms to the curves of your body. This gives you the best support imaginable. Memory foam also disperses body heat to reduce night sweats. Some people find Tempurpedic material to be too firm, but many companies offer less dense softer memory foam products and that can ease some of the firmness of the material. One must be careful when purchasing memory foam products. A density below 3 lbs. can be too soft and does not last as long as higher density memory foam. Come see our site and look at some of the options we offer for bedding items and all kinds of other stuff!
